➕I went to public school all my life. I graduated with an honors diploma. I worked hard, got straight A’s, and loved school. And yet, as an adult, I knew absolutely nothing about American or World History, American Government, or Geography. I’m certain these subjects were taught at various times in my school career, but I’m also certain that I just studied to pass the tests because I lacked interest.
.
➕My kids now love history, of course. Guess who also now finds it fascinating? ME!!! So guess who is learning it now with them? ME!!! We learn together, read together, and research together. I “missed” it in public school, but am able to learn about it now that I’m interested in it.
.
➕Homeschoolers have the advantage of having continuity of education. I never have to wonder if last years’ teacher taught multiplication with this method or that. I don’t wonder which topics they covered, or which ones interest them most. I know every book they’ve read, video they’ve watched, and topic they’ve inquired about. We can pick up where we left off, and don’t have to worry about spending weeks reviewing the basics. I know which subjects are difficult for them and need more work. I get more inside knowledge than a teacher (even the best of teachers) could ever have with them because I’m their mom.
.
➕One of my main goals in homeschooling is to teach my children HOW to learn. If I can equip them to be able to take their curiosity and questions and turn them into research and answers, they will be set. If there are certain subjects or topics that we “miss”, my hope is that they will be able to find those answers if and when they need them.
.
➕Children will NEVER learn everything they need to know in school (whether homeschooled or not). And the things they DO learn might vary from one kid to the next. That’s okay. Teach them to learn. Teach them to find answers. Teach them to seek new information and love learning new things. They will be fine.
